April 2004 - Sledgehammer

Johnson Valley, California

Day 2 - ARCA Rockpile

Day 2 - Wrecking Ball

Day 3 - Jackhammer

After a 6 hour drive we arrived at the lake bed in Johnson Valley at around 1pm.  We setup camp and headed off to get some wheeling in, first up was Sledgehammer.

Things were going smoothly until we hit a traffic jam about 10 minutes into the trail.  Gotta love when full bodied rigs attempt these kinds of trails.  We ended up sitting around for about an hour.

At least there was some wildlife to entertain us.

Still waiting, so we decided to play on some of the optional stuff.

This is all still in the same spot, still waiting.

Me trying some optional stuff.

Somewhere in that boulder pile my sway bar snapped.

Everyone moved up the trail another couple hundred feet, I was still trying to get past the section we had stopped at.  After struggling for a while and noticing my tires weren't hooking up I check the tire pressure.  All of them were up around 9psi.   I aired them down to 4psi again and they started to work much better.

Nice view from the top of the valley.  Afterwards we played in the sand dunes a while before heading back to camp for dinner.  Around 9pm we decided to hit one more trail so we headed off to run Backdoor.  It took a while to figure out the line for the second waterfall but Jack and I eventually made it up unassisted.  We ended up winching Pat up after he bounced around on the climb, Mark broke a longfield on his attempt and Clifton laid his rig on it's side while we were winching him up.  While Mark and Pat replaced Mark's longfield I noticed I had broken one of my coil sliders and it was jammed over the slider stop, preloading the upper coil.

The fix was to use the tender coil slider (red part between the coil springs above) to replace the longer coil slider.  Since the tender coil slider was shorter and could drop below the coil body causing a potential jam I had to use a piece of chain to limit suspension droop on that side to keep the slider from dropping off the coilover body.
