This weekend our club was invited to wheel on some private land. The terrain was medium sized hills covered with thousands of boulders as far as the eye could see. There were primitive roads cut through the hills which allowed access to approximately 2000 acres. The best part, we were allowed to drive anywhere.
The first part of the morning we spent exploring the area close to the road we came in on. There were several large "amphitheatre" style areas, large open fields surrounded by hills covered in boulders. Once would think making trails in this kind of terrain would be a piece of cake but it was actually pretty difficult finding a line you could drive. As you can see in the picture, the boulders started out about garbage can size and up from there.
After some playing around I scouted out a short loop back in one of the canyons. Larry managed to launch his rig up the rock with some momentum but didn't see the massive hole on the other side.
This in the first picture above spot looked like it would be the hardest but was actually pretty easy. Most of us had issues at obstacle in the second picture, the ground was still moist form all the rains and the rocks leading up to the rock face were positioned just right to grab your differential.
After that I made another short loop which involved climbing a short vertical face.....
...a sharp right hand turn between two boulders.....
... then down a sharp drop off on the other side followed by some more downhill boulder crawling.
Here's a nice sized ledge that Scott found. He made it as well as Jack and Craig, Pat an myself were denied.
Scott messing around across the field. He later tried another line near the ledge he found and rolled his rig. On impact it looked like his motor put his fan into the radiator ending his day.
