Half of the club went rockcrawling this weekend and the other half went to the
dunes. As you can tell I was with the rock crawling junkies.

We arrived on Friday afternoon and ran two quick trails, Last Crusade and
Magic Carpet. I only took a few pictures since we didn't really stop to
spectate. I should mention our host Jeff was having problems with his new
full hydro steering and was unable to join us. Regardless we'd like to
thank him for arranging the camping accommodations and setting up the run.

The ride to and from the trails was fun if you didn't mind a little dust, I
couldn't remember the last time I used 5th gear but I definitely used it on some
of the straight-aways which wound along the tops of the hills.

Saturday we ran a trail called Portal to Hell. I was told this was on
private property so make sure you have permission to be out there if you run it
(we did).

The hardest part of the trail was at the start which consisted of 4 big
notches. It seemed like the different rigs all had problems at different
spots, my nemesis proved to be the 2nd notch.

Pictures from the first notch which was pretty wide.

The first picture is from the 3rd notch, the hardest looking of the three.
Next there was a small climb followed by the 4th notch.

Here Rich straddles the 4th notch.

The 3rd notch didn't like Dennis's cage. It seemed like no matter what
he did he got hung up. The second picture shows a small pile of rubber
from his red label Krawlers, amazingly Dennis was not spinning the tires, just
slowly turning them as he tried to get past the notch. In this video watch
for his rear tire to quit turning while the fronts continue forward, what you
are seeing is his axle shaft twisting and finally snapping.

I plugged a hole in one of his front tires while the guys figured out how to
secure his rig to do some exploratory surgery to find out what broke. It
turned out to be the one part he did not have a spare for; the short side axle
shaft. Since there is no way to turn around once you enter the notches we
decided to pull Dennis's rig forward.

Looking down the trail from the 4th notch.
