Memorial Day weekend means it's time for another
club road trip. We made our annual pilgrimage to Skullcrusher which is
nestled in the hills roughly 5000 feet above sea level. This meant cool
daytime temperatures in the mid 80's and even cooler nighttime temperatures in
the 40-50's.

A few of us arrived early on Friday morning and
did some exploring on some of the forest roads.

About mid day we decided to run the lower part of
Skullcrusher as a warm up for the main event on Saturday.

A lot of people consider the lower part a walk in
the park but this spot is a good taste of what the upper has to offer.

Back in camp Jay let us crawl around with his
stick crawler, a radio controlled vehicle with no suspension. Nearly
everything is mounted to the axles which pivot on a spine.

Saturday showed up and our group had swelled to
13 rigs. We started heading onto the trail at 9am. I was a little worried
that the short comp tires would have me getting hung up a lot on the big rocks
but their grip made up for their short stature. I had the easiest time
navigating the first half of the trail in all of the trip sup here so far.

The upper part of Skullcrusher is pretty much
non-stop large obstacles with no exit other than the way you are going or back
the way you came. You pretty much want to have a cache of spare parts at
the trailer or onboard in case of breakage as running the trail in a functional
rig is an all day affair much less trying to drag a disabled rig out.

This trail puts the hurt on rigs even though 95%
of it can be crawled. In this spot Troy was crawling this pile of boulders
and lost a rear axle which bound up in the axle "C" causing the unit bearing
bolts to strip out of the axle knuckle. We made a trail fix which later fell
apart as Troy tried limping out so he ended up walking all the way back to camp.

Somewhere past Volkswagon rock Wes broke a rear
suspension link which took his rig out of the running.

Heading thru the crack.
