Weeks of preparation finally led to the start of our road trip to the Hammers
to run a car in the 2008 King of the Hammers race. We left early Tuesday
morning to make the 324 mile trek to the dusty lake bed in Johnson Valley which
we would call home for the next 5 days.

My rig was to be used for pit support so I made provisions to strap a spare
tire to the back end.

We waited for Jack at Desert Center. Chad was also supposed to head out
in the morning with his rented RV but he had a little run-in with the law and
spent some time in the Scottsdale jail on Monday. He had a court hearing
on Tuesday morning, paid his fine and got his license back and headed out asap.

This is a nice back way to the Hammers which gets you off of I-10 and
eliminates any huge hill climbs making for a very motor home friendly route.

Unlike other teams we chose not to build a new car, instead we picked a rig
from amongst the club members which we thought would be competitive, our entry
was Jack's rig which saw the addition of a pair of front air bumps and the
required safety equipment and nothing more.

Upon arriving at the lake bed we were met by some uncharacteristically warm
weather with no sign of wind. We took advantage of the situation and hit
Backdoor and Resolution just after 1pm.

By the time we got back to camp the wind started to pick up and it blew thru
the night.
