Larry's 86Toyota
(Click for larger images)
These first three shots are from December 2001. Larry was running Dual transfer cases, stock Toyota axles w/ 5.29 ring and pinions turning 35" Baja Claws. His rig originally hit the trails with a carburetor and IFS front suspension, so by the time I first met Larry, his rig was already well used to say the least.
Time marched on and Larry's Toyota pickup was eventually "buggified". Sheet metal was removed and a strong cage was constructed. Larry was pretty meticulous in gaining every extra inch of ground clearance possible, even lifting his drive train to make a flat underbelly. The 35" Claws were swapped out in favor of some 38.5" TSL-SX's. Luckily around the same time Superbirfs and chromoly rear axles became available, these two upgrades really extended the usefulness of the Toyota axles. I know breakages in our group went from a birfield or axle per run to one every couple of months.
This setup saw some hard usage, running nearly every trail in the Phoenix area and many trips to the Hammers in Johnson Valley.
However, Larry always had a custom buggy in the back of his mind and in early 2003 he started to transfer his ideas to steel. This is the start of his 2004 Toyota Tacoma rock buggy.
Everything you see here, Larry fabricated in his garage. The chassis, fenders, hood, and suspension all started as raw steel.
